About the role

We have a great opportunity for an IT Portfolio Consultant to establish, develop and own plans and processes for the IT Portfolio Management service; providing insight and expertise to ensure that IT and business requirements are met. This is a relatively new area under IT Demand Management and will work closely with Group Change Portfolio Management to gain a clear portfolio view of all change being delivered across the IT Division, through both large strategic programmes (Group Change managed) and local change initiatives. 


As an IT Portfolio Consultant you will:



  • Lead, establish and develop processes and plans for a portfolio of IT change, considering IT operations and providing insight and expertise to ensure that business decisions are effectively supported, business requirements are met, and the portfolio is protected against risk.

  • Establish, influence, and monitor the portfolio reporting timetable to provide a full and detailed plan of divisional portfolio change activity. Provide a single source of regular portfolio change status reporting to the IT Executive team, providing insight to ensure that IT change is planned, prioritised, and reviewed effectively.

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships within Group IT and Group Change to proactively identify upcoming IT change and build trust, credibility, and influence with senior stakeholders.

  • Produce, interpret, and present MI to provide insight on the progress of the IT Local Change Portfolio, presenting and following up on recommendations to ensure key decisions are aligned to NFU Mutual standards and IT Portfolio planning.

  • Provide guidance and consultancy on and ensure adherence to the NFU Mutual Change Framework, standards and practices followed by the IT Portfolio. Escalate and follow up on the need for development interventions where appropriate so that effective standards and skills are in place to support business change and governance.

  • Consult with IT teams across the Division involved in change delivery to provide insight on the portfolio delivery dependencies so that decisions on delivery capacity, business as usual priorities and upcoming resource requirements are supported robustly.

  • Perform and oversee project and portfolio health checks in collaboration with Group Change, IT projects and programmes. Report and agree actions, track, and follow up remedies with appropriate stakeholders to ensure adherence to NFU Mutual Change Framework, controls, standards, and methodology.

  • Ensure all IT Local Change risk is maintained, assessed, and considered alongside the strategic portfolio risks, assumptions, issues, decisions, and dependencies (RAIDD) for the Change Portfolio. Where required, establish, develop, and maintain exceptional risk and issue plans for (a) defined area(s). Highlight risks and identify solutions and/ or contingency plans to mitigate risks so that change processes are assured, and activities are successfully delivered.

  • Deliver short term / one-off projects and activities as required by and to the standards and outcomes agreed with Line Manager.

What we're looking for


  • Demonstrable experience of working in a Portfolio Management/ Change Management Office

  • Significant experience of analytical work

  • Experience of establishing relationships with senior stakeholders

  • Excellent MS Office skills, in particular Excel Pivot Tables & data manipulation experience

  • P3O Practitioner (Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices) is essential or willingness to work towards

  • MoP (Management of Portfolios) is essential or willingness to work towards

  • IT or Business related degree

  • PRINCE2 Practitioner or equivalent

  • ITIL Foundation is desirable

  • Experience of using Microsoft Visio is desirable

NFU Mutual are happy to offer its employees informal homeworking. Our team is located in Stratford-upon-Avon and it would be expected that on average, 50% of your working time would be located from one of this office, with the remaining days home based should you wish. Due to COVID-19, our employees continue to work from home and a return to the office is being planned for later in the year.
