At NFU Mutual, we’re committed to creating a supportive environment. Bringing together people from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences not only creates a welcoming atmosphere but also drives innovation and success. Quite simply, it creates a better business. With an emphasis on support and equal opportunity our Guidewire Centre of Excellence actively supports global talent by offering visa sponsorships to bring people into the team. They’re also setting a new standard for gender balance within the tech sector. We spoke to some of the people from our Guidewire Centre of Excellence who shared their experiences about working within the team.

How does the Guidewire Centre of Excellence create a supportive environment?

Richard Hill, Senior Developer: The Guidewire Centre of Excellence operates on a collaborative model where success is not attributed to any one person but rather to the collective effort. The whole principle of working within an agile team is that you don’t achieve, the team achieves. This mindset ensures that all team members, regardless of their experience level, contribute to our overall success, learn from each other, and grow together.

Julia Helm, Head of Guidewire Centre of Excellence: We’re proud to exceed industry standards when it comes to gender diversity in our Guidewire Centre of Excellence. We’ve created a space where people feel supported, respected, and empowered to contribute. As a woman in tech, I can confidently say that NFU Mutual fosters an environment where everyone – regardless of gender – has a chance to succeed. It's about acknowledging different perspectives to achieve the best solutions.

Indu Mari, Senior Developer: Personally, as someone who moved to NFU Mutual from India, I feel that the company has not only welcomed me but actively supports my growth. From team-building activities that encourage cross-cultural exchange to initiatives that support people from different walks of life, I’m encouraged to share my perspective and learn from others in an environment that promotes mutual respect.

How does NFU Mutual support global talent?

Howard Goodman, Head of IT Applications: As a company, NFU Mutual understands the importance of bringing in top talent. Being able to offer visa sponsorship allows us to tap into a broader pool of talent, which is especially beneficial for our technical teams, where expertise in areas like Guidewire is in high demand.

Indu: Moving from India to the UK for a role in the Guidewire Centre of Excellence was a big step, but NFU Mutual made the entire transition smooth and stress-free. From the interview process to visa sponsorship, everything was clearly communicated and well-organised. The HR team was very supportive, providing me with all the information I needed to feel comfortable and prepared for the move. I never felt like I was alone in the process – they truly supported me every step of the way.

Tamalika Mazumder, Senior Tester: When I first joined, I felt immediately recognised. People made a point to ask about my life outside of work, which made me feel valued right away. It was a big moment for me and helped me decide that this was going to be my next venture.

When did you realise NFU Mutual was the place for you?

Alex McCrossen, Professional Trainee: It’s hard to pin down one specific moment, but I think it was when I saw how the company embraced everyone’s background and experiences. It was refreshing to be part of a team where everyone’s perspective is valued, and we all have an equal opportunity to contribute and succeed. This approach made me realise that I could thrive here.

Indu: My moment came when I realised how much my opinions and ideas were valued. Here at NFU Mutual, I feel like my contributions truly matter. The team is open to new ideas, and there’s a real sense of collaboration. It was then that I knew I’m not just an employee; I’m someone whose voice is heard and respected.

Tamalika: I would say when I joined. I didn’t have any such expectations, but it was incredibly great on the very first day. I remember how my manager took me to meet the different people in Guidewire Connect. I was encouraged to put down my own ideas, anything that I had in my mind, be it a question, be it anything they were showing me, I felt recognised. And this is something really new to me, everyone feels part of the team.

What benefits of working here do you value the most?

Richard: There’s an immense focus on personal development. You’re supported if you want to develop a new skill or move into a different area of the company. Plus, the hybrid working model gives me the freedom to exercise in the mornings, which has been great for my well-being.

Tamalika: The support from my team is one of the most valuable benefits. Everyone works together to ensure each other’s success, regardless of their role or seniority. Additionally, NFU Mutual’s focus on work-life balance is crucial for me. I once had to rearrange a meeting to attend a family event, and my manager was completely supportive, which was very important.

Indu: Being able to contribute to real-time, customer-facing experiences is extremely fulfilling. The sense of team spirit and support in every aspect makes it an exceptional place to work.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining NFU Mutual, especially if they’re considering relocating to the UK?

Howard: If you’re thinking of joining NFU Mutual, I would say don’t hesitate. The company has a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and that extends to international talent. The visa sponsorship process is straightforward, and once you’re here, you’ll be supported through every step of your career journey. Plus, you’ll have the chance to work in a dynamic, growing company that values your unique experiences.

Indu: My advice would be to take the opportunity! NFU Mutual offers an environment where your work has a direct impact on the business. You’re not just working behind the scenes – your contributions are recognised and valued. For those considering moving to the UK, the company makes the transition as smooth as possible. You’ll be supported not only professionally but also personally in adjusting to a new country. It’s a place where you’ll feel at home.
