What first attracted you to NFU Mutual?
I was drawn to NFU Mutual’s graduate scheme because of its competitiveness in terms of remuneration, professional qualifications, and corporate opportunities. The structure particularly appealed to me - three years of varied placements across different parts of the business, giving me the chance to build a breadth of experience and skills early in my career. I was also inspired by NFU Mutual’s mutual status, which to me was a strong indicator of ethical values and customer focus.
How does the graduate scheme work?
I am on the Insurance Sales Scheme, which means I complete placements directly within NFU Mutual agencies. Each agency is unique in size, culture, and business focus, so no two placements are the same. This variety has helped me quickly learn how to adapt to different working environments.
What do you like best about your job?
One of the biggest benefits of my scheme is that I get to work directly with our customers in the local community and am licensed to sell NFU Mutual’s products. This hands-on experience gives me a valuable perspective that I can bring back to the corporate side of the business.
How are you supported in your role?
Alongside my placements, I have taken part in a wide range of development workshops, from soft skills, such as negotiation and time management, to technical training delivered by external providers.
What has been your proudest moment so far?
I recently hosted a company-wide Teams broadcast with our CEO, Nick Turner. It’s rare for graduates to engage so closely with senior leaders, and I think it’s a great example of how NFU Mutual empowers its people.
What advice would you have for someone starting out?
My advice to future graduates: Be yourself, don’t be afraid to stand out, and bring energy and passion to everything you do. That’s what will really make you succeed here.
How did you find the onboarding experience?
One thing that really stood out to me during onboarding was how warm and welcoming everyone was. Regardless of their role or seniority, people were genuinely happy to spend time getting to know me and sharing their expertise. This created a supportive environment where I felt comfortable reaching out with questions and ideas from the very start.
What is your current role?
I am now in my third year of the scheme, working within one of our agencies, prospecting commercial clients, as well as selling our Motor, Personal, and Financial Services products - a role I thoroughly enjoy. Before this, I completed a six-month placement in the Agency Department at Head Office, where I managed stakeholders to develop a brand-new renewal management tool. I was responsible for rolling this out to a pilot group of agencies, which gave me great exposure and accountability.
