What made you choose NFU Mutual for your career in risk management?
I found myself in the camp of those who didn’t have a clear vision of what the next 20 years would look like. Instead of seeing this as a drawback, I saw it as an opportunity to explore what truly motivates me. What stood out about NFU Mutual was its commitment to a development-focused culture, a clear progression pathway, and a variety of rewarding projects in a sociable environment. From my first interaction with the company, it was clear that NFU Mutual was a place where I could thrive and grow, which made it the perfect fit for me.

Can you tell us about the Risk Graduate Scheme you’re on?
I joined the Risk Graduate Scheme in September 2022, and it’s been a fantastic journey so far. The scheme is designed to offer a rich variety of placements across different teams. I've worked with the Financial Crime Team, Group Operational Risk Team, Conduct Regulation Assurance Team, and even had an additional placement with the Climate Risk Team. Each placement provided unique challenges and learning opportunities. I also took on division-wide projects, including running the divisional events calendar. This allowed me to meet people across the organisation and contribute to events like development workshops, charity quiz nights, and the Christmas party.

How did you find the onboarding experience at NFU Mutual?
The onboarding experience was excellent. It struck a great balance between learning about the company and getting to know my fellow graduates. The variety of daily activities kept things dynamic and engaging. It was a supportive environment where we could ask questions and get acclimated quickly. This foundation was invaluable when we transitioned to our respective business areas.

What is your current role, and what does it involve?
I’m currently working as a Compliance Consultant within Group Compliance. This role involves managing our relationship with the FCA, one of our main regulators. I’m responsible for understanding various forms of regulation, staying updated on changes, and providing trusted advice to ensure our business areas comply with regulatory requirements. It’s crucial to ensure we meet our compliance standards and deliver the best outcomes for our customers.

What development activities have you undertaken as part of the scheme?
The scheme has offered numerous development activities, including workshops focused on skills like presentations, time management, and more. On the technical side, all Professional Trainees are put through their Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII) exams within the first two months of joining. Beyond formal training, I’ve enjoyed additional opportunities, such as being part of the planning team for the ‘Getting to Know You Day’ for the following year’s cohort and running the NFU Mutual stand at Exeter University’s careers fair. These experiences have been invaluable in broadening my skills and networking.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?
I’m particularly excited about a project that I’ve been selected for, which involves working on a climate change-related initiative with another firm, potentially abroad. Climate Change poses complex challenges for our industry and customers, and I look forward to exploring this topic collaboratively to understand other firms' approaches. It's an opportunity to drive real change in an area that NFU Mutual values strongly.
