What made you choose NFU Mutual for your graduate scheme?
After researching many companies, NFU Mutual stood out because of its individual support for graduates and its approach to maintaining smaller cohorts compared to other large financial services firms. This personal approach, combined with their strong values and customer service philosophy, made NFU Mutual the ideal place for me to begin my career.

Can you tell us a bit about the Finance scheme you're on?
I’m currently part of the Finance scheme at NFU Mutual. The program includes two placements, which can be in areas such as Financial Planning & Analysis, Financial Reporting & Control, or even Properties. Alongside these placements, I’m working towards becoming a Chartered Accountant by pursuing a recognised accounting qualification, such as CIMA or ACCA. It’s a well-rounded program that not only builds technical expertise but also provides exposure to a range of financial disciplines.

How was your onboarding experience?
Having an in-person induction week was a fantastic introduction to NFU Mutual. It gave me the chance to meet other trainees, get familiar with the office environment, and receive a lot of valuable insight from the Directors. The talks we had covered all areas of the business, and it was clear that the leadership team was highly supportive of the graduate scheme. It definitely made me feel welcome and excited for the journey ahead.

What role are you currently in?
I’m on my second placement, working in Financial Reporting & Control, specifically with the Regulatory Reporting team. It’s been a great learning experience so far, and I’m enjoying the new challenges and responsibilities of this role.

What development opportunities have you taken advantage of in the scheme?
The training NFU Mutual provides has been incredible. It covers a wide range of skills, including presenting, influencing, and consulting. The focus on both technical and soft skills has been key to my personal development. Since starting the scheme, I’ve had the chance to address my weaknesses while also growing my strengths. The support I’ve received throughout this process has been amazing, and it’s really boosted my confidence in the workplace.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?
I’d say my biggest achievement has been helping deliver the annual Medium-Term Plan (MTP) during my first placement in Financial Planning & Analysis. Initially a pretty daunting prospect, seeing it through to completion was hugely rewarding. The experience boosted my confidence and gave me a lot of transferable skills that I can take forward in my career.

Do you have any tips for graduates applying to NFU Mutual?
My advice would be to research the company thoroughly. Don’t just focus on what you can bring to NFU Mutual, but also think about what the company can do for you and how you fit with their values and objectives. And, of course, be yourself! Authenticity is key when making connections during the recruitment process.
