What first attracted you to NFU Mutual?
I was drawn to the Underwriting component of the Customer Services Gradate Scheme at NFU Mutual. I thoroughly enjoy drawing conclusions, and the multitude of different risks which are analysed provided a breadth of learning opportunities!
How did you find the onboarding experience?
Excellent! My personal highlight was without a doubt, the Director’s Speed Dating. Obviously, it wasn’t actual speed dating! Instead, it was a fantastic discussion group sized Q&A opportunity with our senior leaders to get their insights on key developments facing the business and on scheme top tips.
What is your current role?
I am part of the Operational Risk and Quality Assurance Team. This team is dedicated to examining and managing risks associated with our daily operations, very analytical!
How does the graduate scheme work?
The Customer Services Gradate Scheme is split between Underwriting and Claims. Both have a placement structure with targeted opportunities in line with your specialism.
What do you like best about your job?
The best thing about the job is the continual learning. No two days are the same. I’m fascinated about the impact of current world issues on the insurance sector and how we can provide cost effective solutions whilst maintaining our high-level of customer service.
How have NFU Mutual invested in you as a person?
I’ve had full access to the tools I need to perform in my role. As well as gaining Professional Qualifications and having classes with the Chartered Insurance Institute, I’ve attended numerous workshops to build my soft business skills and have access to media subscriptions to keep up to date on business and market developments.
How are you supported in your role?
I’ve had coaching sessions with the talent team, one-to-one leadership sessions with senior figures, and I’ve also been paired with a mentor from the second year of the graduate scheme. So, if I have a question or need guidance, I know there’s someone I can approach. This gives me the confidence to explore my passion – risk analysis.
What has been your proudest moment so far?
What I’m proudest of is not limited to a single moment but rather making the most of opportunities alongside my job. This includes supporting the next cohort of graduates on their induction day and taking part in focus groups to continually improve the scheme. These activities have helped me develop throughout the year.
What advice would you have for someone starting out?
Be inquisitive – you can never ask too many questions. The more you ask the more you learn. Be self-aware – know your strengths and areas for development. Welcome constructive feedback to identify these. Be confident – make the most of the opportunities presented to you and take the initiative. You get out what you put in, and it’s up to you to make the most of the scheme.
What makes NFU Mutual such a great place to work?
The people! I’ve found a great company culture, engaging and rewarding work, and significant learning and development opportunities. I’ve never had a dull day here. Being a mutual with a focus on the best interest of our customers is also fundamental. This ethos contributes significantly to the culture and makes NFU Mutal a great place to work.
