What led you to choose NFU Mutual for your career?
Coming from a rural background with a degree in Mathematics, I found it challenging to find a job that matched my qualifications while allowing me to stay in a more rural setting. When I discovered NFU Mutual’s graduate scheme, it was a perfect fit. The company’s reputation for putting customers first and its ethical approach to business really resonated with me. The Pricing team’s YouTube videos showcased a department with strong ethics, a sense of humour, and a genuine passion for their work. Although I didn’t initially know what Pricing was, the people seemed like a great fit, and my curiosity led me to apply. I’m so glad I did - it’s been an incredible experience!

Can you tell us about the Pricing scheme you’re on?
The Pricing scheme is unique in that it views us as analysts first and professional trainees second. This approach provides a strong support network and a solid friendship group. While we have the flexibility to rotate teams within Pricing, it’s not a requirement, allowing us to dive deeply into specific areas if we choose to. The scheme also encourages us to pursue professional qualifications, such as the CII Diploma or Actuarial Exams. I’m excited about starting an MSc in Data Science through the scheme. Having the freedom to choose qualifications that align with our career goals is great.

How was your onboarding experience at NFU Mutual?
The onboarding experience was fantastic! I had just relocated to Stratford and didn’t know anyone, so the first week, filled with activities, training, and meeting new people, was a wonderful way to integrate into corporate life. The support from the recruitment team and Learning & Organisational Development was exceptional. NFU Mutual’s onboarding experience was even nominated for an award, and I can definitely see why - it was engaging and welcoming from day one.

What is your current role, and what does it entail?
I’m currently a Lead Analyst in the Commercial Pricing team. My daily tasks involve making rating changes, predicting their impacts, and monitoring high-level metrics. I enjoy the blend of technical, software, business, and stakeholder management skills required in this role. It’s more creative than I initially thought, often feeling like working on a never-ending jigsaw puzzle. I love knowing that our work can directly impact customer satisfaction. My team is composed of incredibly bright and supportive individuals, creating a fantastic learning and growth environment.

What development activities have you engaged in as part of the scheme?
The scheme has provided numerous development opportunities. I’ve participated in various soft skills training courses that enhance professionalism and management abilities. I also completed the Cert CII exams, which laid a solid foundation in insurance fundamentals. Regular development presentations every six months help to showcase and reward our progress. The strong development culture within Pricing ensures that our hard work is frequently recognised and valued.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?
While baking a profiterole tower for a team bake-off was a fun challenge, my biggest achievement has been my promotion to Lead Analyst. It’s been incredibly rewarding to transition from having no prior knowledge of insurance and pricing to becoming proficient enough for this recognition. The promotion reflects the significant progress I’ve made and the hard work I’ve put into learning and growing over the past two years.

What advice do you have for graduates applying to NFU Mutual?
Be yourself and let your unique personality shine through your application. While many graduates have similar academic qualifications, what sets you apart is your attitude, curiosity, and individual interests. Even if you feel nervous, remember that the interviewers want you to succeed. Focus on clearly communicating your thoughts and research NFU Mutual’s values and ethos, as these often arise during the application process. Your genuine interest and personality will make a significant difference.
