What made you choose NFU Mutual for your graduate scheme?
During the final year of my Mathematics degree, I was searching for a graduate scheme that would offer professional development opportunities, engaging and challenging work, and a solid work-life balance. NFU Mutual really stood out. The company has a great variety of graduate schemes, and it’s known for promoting Professional Trainees into higher roles within the organisation. That reputation, along with their supportive environment, made it a clear choice for me.
Tell us a bit about the Internal Audit scheme you were part of.
I just completed the Internal Audit Professional Trainee Scheme. Unlike some of the other schemes that involve rotations across different departments, my scheme was focused on one team. However, the nature of internal auditing means I got to work on a variety of audits across different business areas, which provided a broad experience. Early on, I supported aspects of audits, but as I progressed, I learned how to lead audits end-to-end, from the planning stages through to reporting. That hands-on experience was invaluable.
How did you find the onboarding experience?
My onboarding was a little unconventional because it took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, so everything happened remotely rather than face-to-face. However, it was still a good experience. In the first week, we had a mix of activities to get to know the other Professional Trainees, worked on a mini-project that we presented, and met some of the directors. Despite the remote setup, my team was incredibly welcoming, and I had plenty of opportunities to understand their work and build strong relationships.
What is your current role?
After three years on the Professional Trainee Scheme, I’ve now transitioned into an Auditor role. It’s exciting to take on this position and apply everything I’ve learned during my time on the scheme.
What kind of development activities did you undertake as part of the scheme?
One of the key parts of the scheme was professional qualifications. I completed the CII Certificate in Insurance alongside my fellow Professional Trainees, followed by the Certified Internal Auditor qualification. I’ve also attended various workshops, and I’m currently in the final stages of earning my Chartered Internal Auditor qualification.
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
Leading audits from start to finish has definitely been my biggest achievement. Every audit presents unique challenges that require different skills - whether it’s planning the audit, conducting tests, managing stakeholders, or writing up the final report within tight deadlines. Then, you get to do it all again in a completely different business area. Mastering those processes and consistently delivering results is something I’m proud of.
Do you have any tips for graduates applying to NFU Mutual’s schemes?
I’d say make sure you highlight your individual strengths. Have examples ready from your university experience or personal projects that demonstrate those strengths and show how you’ve overcome challenges. It’s important to be authentic and provide real-world evidence of how you’ve handled various situations.
