What inspired you to choose NFU Mutual for your graduate scheme?
Growing up in a rural area, I was always aware of NFU Mutual and the local, personal service they provided. When I was deciding between sectors in the financial services industry, I considered both banking and insurance. With so many graduate schemes available, I decided to focus on companies I genuinely wanted to work for, avoiding the scatter-gun approach many take. I researched NFU Mutual further and felt aligned with their core values - especially their emphasis on doing the right thing and focusing on customer outcomes over profit maximisation. Working for a mutual company was a major draw for me.
Can you tell us more about the Customer Services scheme you’re part of?
For the first year, I relocated to Bristol to work in NFU Mutual’s regional service centre, which was an invaluable experience. I became a licensed underwriter and gained a deeper understanding of our customers. Following that year, I moved to the Head Office, where I worked in Customer Service Operations, then moved into the Liability Claims team, and now I’m in Group Propositions. The scheme offers tremendous flexibility - you can choose to specialise or keep your role broad, depending on your interests and goals.
How did you find the onboarding experience at NFU Mutual?
It was incredibly smooth, especially since it was my first job post-university. Induction week was a great opportunity to connect with the rest of the graduate cohort, which quickly became a valuable support network. We had Q&A sessions with the Directors, got to know the company better, and were introduced to a comprehensive training program that set us up for success over the year.
What is your current role, and what excites you most about it?
I’m currently a Propositions Assistant, and my role focuses on expanding the services our risk management team offers to customers. It’s a position I didn’t even know existed when I joined the scheme, but it’s been a fantastic fit for me. The work is dynamic, and I really enjoy being part of a team that continuously looks for ways to add value for customers.
What kind of development activities have you participated in as part of the scheme?
I’ve taken part in over ten workshops covering a broad range of topics - from effective influencing to consultancy skills. I’ve also benefited from having a mentor who has been instrumental in helping me clarify my career goals. On top of that, I’ve been supported in completing professional qualifications, including the CII qualifications and a Level 7 apprenticeship. The development opportunities at NFU Mutual have been extensive and invaluable.
What’s been your biggest achievement so far?
One of my proudest achievements has been developing a new risk management proposition. It will enable us to protect customers in ways we couldn’t before. It’s incredibly satisfying to see months of hard work come together in a tangible product that genuinely benefits customers.
What advice do you have for graduates applying to NFU Mutual?
My biggest tip is to do your homework! Research NFU Mutual’s strategic pillars and find out what sets them apart from competitors. Use this information to align your skills and experiences with the company’s goals when answering application questions. And, as cliché as it sounds, be yourself! It’s advice we’ve all heard from university career centres, but it’s true - authenticity goes a long way.
