What initially attracted you to NFU Mutual?
I was initially drawn to NFU Mutual because of the strong reputation of its graduate programmes. Rotating across different teams while working towards professional qualifications was incredibly appealing. As I delved deeper, I was impressed by the company’s mutual structure, which underscores a genuine commitment to its customers. The recognition NFU Mutual has received, like the Gallup Exceptional Workplace award, speaks volumes about its dedication to creating a positive work environment, aligning perfectly with its ‘Great Place to Work’ strategy.

Can you describe the HR Graduate Scheme you joined?
I joined the HR Graduate Scheme in September 2020, which offered a fantastic opportunity to rotate across six key teams: HR Services, Reward, Employee Relations, Learning and Development, Resourcing, and HR Business Partnering. These rotations provided a comprehensive view of the HR function and how each area contributes to the organisation's overall success. Alongside these placements, I pursued my CIPD Level 5 qualification, which allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. This blend of practical experience and academic growth was incredibly valuable.

How did you find the onboarding experience at NFU Mutual?
The onboarding experience was excellent from start to finish. The recruitment process was smooth, with consistent support and regular updates. After receiving my offer, NFU Mutual kept in touch frequently, ensuring I felt prepared and welcomed. The week-long induction programme was a highlight, offering a chance to meet fellow graduates, connect with senior leaders, and gain a deeper understanding of the company. It set a positive tone for my entire experience.

What is your current role, and what does it involve?
I currently work as a Talent Development Specialist within the Talent Team. Having completed the Graduate programme, I now lead our Early Careers Programme, managing our Graduate and Intern initiatives. My role also involves overseeing internal talent progression and career development strategies, ensuring employees have clear opportunities for growth within the company. A significant part of my job is providing career coaching, helping individuals navigate their career paths and reach their full potential.

What development activities have you undertaken as part of the scheme?
During the scheme, I engaged in various leadership development courses, such as resilience training, effective influencing, presentation skills, and coaching conversations. I also completed my CIPD Level 5 qualification, which was crucial for my development. Contributing to different HR projects provided hands-on experience and enhanced my skills. Even after completing the scheme, I continued my development journey and am about to start a Level 7 Senior People Professional qualification, with support from my manager.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?
My biggest achievement has been successfully implementing a summer internship programme. I led the process from market research and programme design to presenting the plan to the HR Director and overseeing its implementation. We started with eight interns in the first year, and the number grew to thirteen in the second year. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the programme expand, and I’m excited to see its continued evolution.

Any tips for graduates applying to the scheme?
My top tip is to be authentic - bring your unique perspectives and personality to the table. Researching and understanding why you’re applying and what excites you about the company is important. Don’t hesitate to ask questions throughout the process - the Talent Team is always ready to provide support and guidance!
