What first attracted you to NFU Mutual?
I chose NFU Mutual because it’s a market-leading insurance company with a strong local presence. What really stood out to me was the company’s genuine commitment to its customers and rural communities as a mutual. During my research, I was impressed by how valued employees are and how much emphasis is placed on supporting both staff and customers. The company’s ethos and supportive culture made it an easy choice.
How does the graduate scheme work?
The Finance Graduate scheme offers a broad, hands-on experience across the division, allowing me to develop both technical and strategic skills. I began in the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team, gaining insight into new financial planning software and worked on board reporting for both General Insurance and Financial Services. Spending 18 months in this team gave me the chance to take ownership of tasks and develop my confidence. My second placement is in the Financial Reporting & Control (FRC) and Tax teams, where I’m building my technical accounting knowledge and stakeholder engagement skills. This rotation has given me a broader perspective on the finance function.
What do you like best about your job?
From day one in my team, I was trusted with real work, which helped me learn quickly and feel like a valued member of the team.
How are you supported in your role?
As part of the graduate scheme, I’ve completed several training courses focused on developing my interpersonal skills, such as coaching and effective influencing. These courses have been invaluable in building my confidence when working with challenging stakeholders and developing my leadership skills. On the technical side, I have completed the CII qualification, which gave me a solid foundation in insurance fundamentals, and I’m currently working towards my CIMA accounting qualification.
What has been your proudest moment so far?
My biggest achievement so far has been working on an expenses project set by the CEO, where I analysed financial data and presented my findings and recommendations alongside senior colleagues. This experience really highlighted how the graduate scheme enables us to work closely with senior leaders who value our input and support our development.
What advice would you have for someone starting out?
Be yourself – your academic achievements are important, it’s equally vital to show how you’ll fit into the company’s culture. Let your personality shine through and demonstrate your enthusiasm for learning and contributing. Authenticity and a willingness to get involved will make your application stand out.
How did you find the onboarding experience?
My onboarding experience was really welcoming. The induction week introduced us to the company’s values and key projects, and we had the opportunity to meet some of the directors and discuss NFU Mutual’s future direction.
What is your current role?
I’m currently working in the Tax team where I am developing and applying my technical knowledge. My role involves interpreting regulations, advising stakeholders, and anticipating the impact of tax issues across the business.
