What inspired you to choose NFU Mutual for your career?
I was always aware of NFU Mutual’s strong reputation, especially coming from an agricultural background. However, what really drew me in was discovering the breadth of opportunities and placements available through the Group Change Professional Trainee scheme. The chance to develop into a future role with such a well-regarded company was incredibly appealing. NFU Mutual’s commitment to nurturing talent and providing a diverse range of experiences made it the perfect choice for me.
Can you describe the Group Change scheme you’re on?
The Group Change Professional Trainee scheme is designed to build skills in project, programme, and portfolio management, which are crucial for NFU Mutual to achieve its strategic goals. The scheme covers four key areas: Enterprise Portfolio Management, Change Delivery, Change Management, and Portfolio Management. By rotating through these areas, I’m gaining a comprehensive understanding of the change journey and how an insurance company operates, which is invaluable for my future career.
How did you find the onboarding experience at NFU Mutual?
The onboarding experience was exceptional. Within my first week, I had the unique opportunity to meet and interact with all the executive directors, including the CEO. It was incredibly valuable to ask them questions and gain insight into NFU Mutual’s values and future direction. It really helped me understand the company’s vision and how I fit into it from the start.
What is your current role, and what does it involve?
Currently, I’m rotating within the Enterprise Portfolio Management Office as a Project Management Office Analyst. My role focuses on learning project and programme controls and governance, and ensuring that change initiatives are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. I also work on communications and strategy to support our departmental goals and ensure we have the right culture and capabilities to deliver value to our customers.
What development activities have you undertaken as part of the scheme?
The scheme has been fantastic for developing both my soft and technical skills. Regular training sessions provided by NFU Mutual’s Learning and Organisational Development department enhance soft skills. On the technical side, all Professional Trainees are put through their Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII) exams within the first two months of joining. Now, I’m gaining hands-on experience with real change projects and pursuing a Level 4 Associate Project Management apprenticeship.
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
One of my proudest achievements has been organising and presenting at the Group Change Strategy Day in front of 130 colleagues. This experience allowed me to showcase my understanding of Group Change operations and strategic direction while also honing my presentation skills. It was a significant opportunity to raise my profile within the company and demonstrate my capabilities.
Do you have any application tips for graduates interested in NFU Mutual?
My advice is to be yourself. When you’re successful in your application, you’ll know for certain that the company is the right fit for you. Authenticity is key, and it helps ensure that both you and the company are aligned in terms of values and expectations.
