Since joining NFU Mutual in 2009, Melanie Arthur has built a rewarding career in pensions. Now, she’s preparing to take on an exciting new challenge as she steps into the role of Head of Reward and Pensions this October. We caught up with Mel to hear more about her journey, the support she’s received, and what she’s looking forward to in her new role.

Mel, congratulations on your promotion! Can you tell us about your career journey so far?
Thank you! I joined NFU Mutual as a Pensions Administrator after working for a third-party consultancy. Since then, I’ve worked in pensions throughout my career here and gained a range of qualifications along the way. In early 2024, I moved into the HR division, which gave me the chance to get involved in broader projects - and now I’m about to take on the Head of Reward and Pensions role. I’m really excited for the next chapter.

What attracted you to the Head of Reward and Pensions role?
It’s a new challenge for me. I’ve specialised in pensions for most of my career, but I’ve recently started branching out into some reward projects and found it really interesting. I think reward complements pensions nicely - there are lots of similarities - so it felt like a natural next step. It’s an excellent opportunity to bring my experience into a broader role.

What are you most looking forward to in the new role?
I am looking forward to the opportunity to shape the future reward and pensions strategy in line with NFU Mutual's key objectives. This will involve gaining a greater insight into different areas of the business which I perhaps don't work as closely with at the moment. I am also looking forward to bringing together two talented teams and seeing how the reward and pensions teams can learn from and help to support each other.

How is NFU Mutual supporting your transition into the new role?
The handover process has been fantastic. There’s a clear plan in place between now and October, and I’ve been given a detailed handover document and plenty of one-to-one time with the current Head of Reward. The team has also been so welcoming and supportive - I feel fortunate to be learning from such a strong group of people.

You’ve been with NFU Mutual since 2009. How has the company supported your development over the years?
I’ve had so much support, both in gaining technical qualifications and developing my soft skills. NFU Mutual helped me with coaching, mentoring, and training courses that helped build my confidence and presence. There’s a genuine commitment here to assisting people to grow, and I’ve had opportunities to take on different roles within pensions, which have helped shape my career and led me to where I am now.

What do you think NFU Mutual does particularly well when it comes to reward and benefits?
I think what sets us apart is that we’re people-focused – whether that’s our customers or our employees. That shows in the way we look after our colleagues through our benefits offering be that through our pension scheme or the wider benefits package.

How would you describe your leadership style?
Kindness is at the core of how I lead. I believe in giving people space to grow and learn but being there when they need support. It’s important to be approachable and create an environment where people feel they can thrive.

And finally, what’s been the most rewarding part of your NFU Mutual journey so far?
The people, without a doubt. I’ve had such great support from my manager, my colleagues, and the wider business - particularly during this transition. It’s been overwhelming in the best way. I’m excited about the difference we can make in reward and pensions, and to be part of an area that helps make NFU Mutual a great place to work.
