Learning and development
Bringing the best out of you
We want you to reach your full potential and do the best work of your career at NFU Mutual. So we’ll train you. We’ll encourage you. We’ll develop you. And we’ll challenge you where you need to be challenged while supporting you every single step of the way.
We’ve invested in numerous personal and professional development programmes that enable you to develop your skills, expertise and career, while ensuring that, as a business, we continue to be profitable, in line with our three key objectives.
Professional and personal development
We’ll make sure that your development plan is tailored to you and your needs. For example, you might want to focus on something specific, like improving your PowerPoint skills or developing your one-to-one coaching abilities. But you might also want to work on your behaviours, on your softer skills.
That could be anything from raising your self-awareness, to big picture thinking. Everything we do is about helping you to be even better. And providing it’s relevant to your role, we'll also support you - practically and financially - to gain recognised professional or academic qualifications.
Management development
Skilled and capable managers provide their teams with clear expectations, behaviours and standards that will help them to develop and flourish. So whether you’re a first-time manager or you’ve been leading teams for a few years, we’re committed to your continued development.
From managing individual performance, to giving effective 360° feedback, from how to adapt your style for operational management and project management, we’ll continue to build on the skills you’ve gained and help you to gain recognised ILIM qualifications.
Leadership development
Great leaders never stop learning. We’ll work with you to help you identify the right type of leadership development and support. For example, we’re part of the Henley Partnership, an exclusive group of companies which have access to high-quality continuing professional development, including a programme of one-day masterclasses delivered by industry experts.
Coaching, mentoring, change support, when to flex your own leadership style - we have a range of programmes designed to help you become an even better leader. We also work with Henley Business School to develop bespoke programmes for leaders.

Supporting Women in Finance
We’re proud to be a signatory to HM Treasury’s Women in Finance Charter. The Charter asks financial services firms to commit to implementing four key industry actions to improve gender diversity at senior levels in the workplace within our industry. As part of the Charter, Trisha Jones, HR Director, was confirmed as our member of the Senior Executive team responsible for gender and diversity.
When we signed the Charter in October 2018, we had 36% female representation in senior management. In September 2019 we published our target to reach 38% by the end of September 2021, and introduced a series of initiatives to help us achieve it. We’re proud to have achieved our target a year early, during 2020, and in September 2021 we currently have 40% female representation in senior management.
We will continue to monitor progress and are committed to further embedding our principles of fairness, consistency, objectivity and professionalism in our approach to recruiting, developing, promoting and leading our people.

Looking after your wellbeing
Your mental wellbeing
Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Our Employee Assistance Programme is a positive, preventative and supportive advice service that can help you deal with events and issues that can affect your everyday work and personal life. The confidential service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - and is easily accessible via the app, by visiting the website or calling the helpline.
Your physical wellbeing
Your physical wellbeing affects how much energy you have and how you feel emotionally as well as physically. It encompasses all aspects of your health - including your fitness, what you eat and drink, whether you smoke and the impact of any medical conditions you have. We run a range of initiatives across NFU Mutual - from promoting healthier lunch options to encouraging you to take better breaks. Think about signing-up to the Cycle to Work Scheme or taking advantage of our gym discount scheme. It’s not about running marathons but looking after yourself!
Your financial wellbeing
We understand that money matters - and that juggling personal finances can be a cause of concern. There are a number of ways that we can help you manage personal finances well to create financial security, reduce day-to-day stress caused by debt and build financial reserves. You could save money by taking advantage of the discounts and offers we have for NFU Mutual Insurance Products or through our Perkz scheme. You also have access to a dedicated Financial Advisor, who can help with financial planning, retirement planning and ensuring that your financial goals are met.
Your social wellbeing
One of the great things about working here - and something our people mention a lot - is the sense of family and team spirit. We run regular events to get people together, locally and nationally. But social wellbeing isn’t just about socialising at work. Work-life balance is hugely important, and we’ll help to make sure that you have a healthy balance between the two. We also encourage everyone here to volunteer or give back to local communities.
Supporting others
Set up in 1998, the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust promotes and supports UK charities working in agriculture, rural development and insurance. Last year alone, we donated £218,300 to worthwhile causes supporting education, research, social welfare and poverty relief. Our Community Giving Fund provides grants to support local initiatives that need a helping hand. In 2019, it helped 88 community groups and charities across the UK.
We encourage all our people to do their bit too. Our Employee Volunteering Scheme allows staff time off from work to help good causes in their local community. Last year alone, 345 employees gave 2,415 hours to make a difference at schools and playgroups, hospices, foodbanks and the National Trust.
