Actuarial Function

Financial Risk

The Financial Risk department focuses on measuring and managing the financial risks faced by the organisation. This includes setting regulatory capital requirements, managing the with profits fund, and monitoring the Group’s solvency position. Join us and you’ll use your expertise to deliver effective financial risk management and help set business strategy. It's varied and interesting work - you can be assessing exposure to market crashes one day and extreme flooding the next. In short, you’ll play a key role in protecting the business from the financial risks it faces every day.

Finance Actuarial

Join this team based in the Finance division and you’ll be helping to calculate the reserves for our insurance business. It’s vital work, ensuring we have enough money to honour our promises to our customers. As well as helping to make sure NFU Mutual remains solvent, you’ll also be providing the information that enables senior management to make sound financial decisions, for instance in relation to bonuses to with-profits customers or levels of Mutual Bonus.

Actuarial Function

Working across the Life and General Insurance areas of the business, we carry out a range of risk-led second line assurance. Join this team and you’ll be directly supporting sustainable profitable growth for NFU Mutual by assuring technical business processes across different areas, such as Pricing, Reserving, Capital Modelling and Investments.

Meet some of the team

Adam Byrne, Actuarial Consultant

In 2016, I was working as a teacher in central London, but looking to move out of the city into a new role. I really liked that NFU Mutual is owned entirely by its policyholders. This means it truly cares about its customers and that was the kind of company I wanted to work for.

I joined as an Actuarial Trainee, with an excellent study package, including financial support for study materials. I’ve also gained experience in several teams, which has helped me grow professionally. I’ve also had the support of a mentor, who helps me to consider how to progress in my career.

Faizan Shah, Actuary Trainee

After university in 2019, I was looking for somewhere to help me with my goal of becoming a qualified Actuary and NFU Mutual offered that. Then, when I came to the assessment day, I saw so much more. It looked like a great place to work, with excellent benefits. The people here are fantastic - everyone’s willing to go the extra mile to help you develop.

The company’s also invested significantly in me - I’m on an Apprenticeship scheme, so I have all the study material I need and training for 20% of my working time. This gives me the chance to apply the skills I learn in real life situations.

Amy Shields, Actuarial Consultant

There’s a strong development culture here and I’ve always had support from the company and my managers to learn, grow and take on new opportunities. I’ve had the chance to work with different departments around the business and been involved in a variety of work outside my “desk job”. For example, I ran our trainee recruitment, helped to design our divisional logo, and trained as a mental health first aider.

The company also supported me in my passion for promoting diversity in our industry. I arranged sponsorship from NFU Mutual to the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries’ diversity initiative, which encourages diversity in the Actuarial profession.
