Change and Project Management

Optimising our business for the benefit of our customers

Change and Project Management

Over 80 people are focused on change and project management across NFU Mutual. Our mission is to lead, define, design and deliver the change portfolio - to optimise business operation and progression for the overall benefit of NFU Mutual and our customers. In fact, doing the right thing by our customers is at the heart of everything we do. We manage finances, resources, dependencies, change impacts, stakeholders and much more to deliver change successfully.

We continue to make a significant investment in our change portfolio, so there are always new projects and programmes to get involved in and a varied portfolio to manage. We know that change can be a tough area to work in - the pace, complexity and scale of change brings many challenges. But our strong work ethic and team spirit means that we work together, support each other and strive to improve. It’s what makes things happen.

Our key teams

Change Delivery

Our team of Project Managers, Programme Managers, Senior Programme Managers and Change Managers ensure the effective, on-time delivery of all projects and programmes. The team delivers change through the co-ordinated management of projects and change management activities, helping NFU Mutual achieve our strategy and deliver against our objectives. We have to make sure that we’re optimising return on investment and delivering to time, cost, quality and scope; while managing the risks involved.

Enterprise Portfolio Management Office (EPMO)

Calling on Change Consultants, PMO Leads, Analysts and Administrators, we apply expert knowledge, share best practice, and work collaboratively to ensure we uphold quality standards, governance and controls. We’re a hands-on team, working on the projects and programmes every day, offering expertise and endless support. Everything we do is centred around the Change Framework that we manage on behalf of NFU Mutual; this includes capturing lessons and driving continuous improvements. We also support portfolio governance through our reporting, insights and data quality assurance services.

Head of Group Change

The Head of Group Change is supported by a small team to lead our change and project management colleagues and communicate a clear vision and direction to ensure that we deliver the right outcome. We’re also here to provide support to each service and act as escalation points to make sure that colleagues are able to perform effectively.

Portfolio Management

We coordinate our extensive portfolio of change, balancing 'Change the Business' with 'Run the Business' while optimising return on investment. We work closely with Sponsors and Senior Management to enable the assessment, selection, prioritisation and control of NFU Mutual’s projects in line with strategic objectives. We’re continuously reviewing new approaches, partnering with each division to assess the attractiveness and affordability of new change initiatives, while supporting current projects and programmes to identify and resolve any delivery issues.

Meet some of the team

Liz Gallagher, Portfolio Manager (IT Division)

When I joined NFU Mutual in 2017, I was attracted by the fact that everyone here talks about what a great company it is to work for. Since I joined, I’ve had lots of support to develop my career. I started in Group Change and then moved to Portfolio Management, which fired my ambition to look into becoming a leader.

So, the company gave me the opportunity to go on an external leadership course. This helped me to understand my personal qualities as a leader and how I can use them effectively. I hugely appreciated the opportunity and have used a lot of what I’ve learned.

Nicola Wilde, Project Manager

I thoroughly enjoy my role and I’ve had some great opportunities to grow and contribute since I joined. It can be challenging and fast paced at times, but there’s always someone on hand to give you advice and just listen when you need them to.

My experience has been overwhelmingly positive. I think the most important element for me is how the company treats people - I feel listened to and valued. There’s a wealth of opportunities across the business, so progression is available should you want it. They also invest a lot in local communities and charities, which I think is really important for such a big local employer.

Paul Nicholas, Programme Manager

The culture at NFU Mutual is very much one of inclusion. This starts at interview stage, through induction and continues from there. Teams are relatively small, so you build relationships very quickly. But with the scale of the organisation, those relationships grow rapidly.

It’s a people-centric culture too, and this works through both professional and social channels. There’s a wonderful mix of people and experience here, which means there’s always someone able to support you. That could be through knowing how something works, or being able to provide an introduction to someone who can help. The culture’s also extremely professional, so there are great opportunities to learn and develop.
