Human Resources

Creating a great place to work for everyone

Human Resources

One of NFU Mutual’s key aims is to be a great place to work. That’s why we’re proud to be one of only 25 companies worldwide to receive the Exceptional Place to Work award from Gallup. Here in the Human Resources department at our Stratford-upon-Avon Head Office, we invest a lot in developing our people and their careers.

Everything we do is about giving them an outstanding experience so they can produce the best work of their careers. From attracting the best talent, to giving the business expert advice and enabling people to build a rewarding career, we look after their and the company’s best interests. Just as important, we respect and care for everyone we deal with.

Our key teams

HR Business Partnering and Organisational Change

We work closely with every part of the Group to support their long-term business goals with relevant people programmes. By producing meaningful insight and thought leadership on people issues, we help create plans for change and develop strategic people programmes that support future business needs.

It’s about making sure the Group optimises people performance to both run and change the business effectively, while we continue to drive world class levels of engagement and make this a truly great place to work. Our broad remit ranges from strategic workforce planning, through to engagement strategies, talent and succession planning and driving people change.

HR Employee Relations

Join this team and you’ll help us lead the way in advising, guiding, coaching and supporting the business to manage their people issues. It’s about setting and maintaining strategies around equality, diversity and wellbeing to ensure people are treated fairly and consistently.

At the same time, our advice needs to balance commercial, legal and people needs, so managers can make effective decisions. By staying up-to-date with the latest trends and developing progressive people policies, we help make NFU Mutual a great place to work.

HR Management Information

To maintain NFU Mutual’s position as a great place to work, we need to make decisions based on high quality data. That’s where this team comes in, providing HR and Learning and Organisational Development reporting and analysis that informs decisions and helps to improve business performance and operational effectiveness.

Join us and you could be learning about business areas’ needs and creating self-service dashboards for them, checking reports, investigating data or presenting data insights to managers to drive change. It’s exciting and challenging work that has real business impact.

HR Service Centre

We’re involved in a wide range of HR activities to give the business and our people the very best HR advice and support. Join us and you could be involved in making job offers to new joiners, managing changes to work contracts, including the annual pay review, or checking compliance for regulated roles.

Or, you may be advising managers on HR policies and processes or answering questions from across the business on HR issues. In short, you’ll help to deliver a first-class HR service and be the first port of call for employees and managers.

HR Systems

Join this team and you’ll be helping to design, build and maintain the HR systems that support every area of our business. We deliver stable and reliable self-service systems that enable the efficient and effective processing of people data to support business goals.

That means we work closely with the business to understand their aims, so we can continuously build, renew and improve their systems and meet their current and future needs. We are the technology gurus of the HR team!

Organisational Change

In this small, influential team, we work closely with senior business leaders to guide the design, development and delivery of organisational change. We work on a wide range of change projects, from major structural transformation to changing business processes.

This means we get involved at every level, from setting out strategic change principles to leading consultation processes and assessing the success of individual programmes. It’s all about using our expertise to make sure NFU Mutual remains a great place to work.

Payroll

Working closely with the Reward and HR Service Centre teams, we deliver the Group’s end to end payroll service. As well as ensuring our people are paid accurately and on time, we ensure all benefits and bonus schemes are correctly processed and produce reports for business areas.

We also report to HMRC, so we make sure NFU Mutual complies with any legislative changes. We’re always looking to improve our processes to deliver a high quality and reliable service to the business.

Resourcing

In this team we work closely with every area of the business, including our agency network. We aim to understand their recruitment needs, agree on the best approach, such as headhunting or advertising, and attract the right people for them.

It’s important to ensure business managers and everyone who applies to join us has an exceptional experience. So at the end of each campaign, we analyse the results to see what approach worked best and how we can improve the process for everybody.

Reward

We ensure our people feel recognised and enable them to share in our success by advising the business on all aspects of employee rewards. Join us and you could work on anything from the annual pay review or our bonus and incentive plans, to designing the benefits we offer employees or producing reports and papers for Executive management on reward.

Reward also play a very important role in NFU Mutual corporate governance in areas such as reporting on Executive Pay and Gender pay reporting - these are all areas you could be working on when you join Reward. Whatever you work on, you’ll have the chance to make a real impact for all employees and help make NFU Mutual a rewarding place to work.

Risk and Compliance

We ensure that HR and Learning & Organisational Development comply with Financial Services regulation and the Group’s Risk and Policy Framework. That means working with our colleagues to define and oversee all risk and compliance activities including reviewing and developing operational risk documents, evaluating risks, implementing controls / mitigating steps and management of all audit and assurance activities. At the same time, we keep up to date with regulatory and legislative changes to respond to potential emerging risks.

Vendor

In this team, we support and advise our HR colleagues on the selection and management of any external HR service providers, with a key focus on delivering quality services and value for money. We’re involved at every stage of the process, from choosing a provider to carrying out due diligence, bringing them onboard, managing and reviewing services and renewing contracts

Meet some of the team

Sarah Godwin, HR Service Centre Adviser

I joined at the end of 2019 and this was my first HR role. It goes without saying that everybody I work with has been lovely and helpful, with incredibly supportive management. It would be easy to feel like just another number, but I don’t get a sense of that at all.

No matter what your role, you’re encouraged to speak up with your own thoughts or concerns, because every opinion matters in making decisions and implementing improvements. To run a company that provides a world-class, personal customer service experience, the heads and hearts have to be in the right place. That’s exactly how it feels here.

Matt Watson, Leadership Development Specialist

I’d heard that NFU Mutual look after their people, but when I joined in 2019, I wasn’t expecting it to be as friendly as it is. It’s not only friendly, but you’re respected and encouraged to develop yourself, as well others. For a fairly large company it has a certain family feel to it.

It’s also fun - I love that people take time out to chat with each other and not just about work. So, we walk the talk when it comes to our guiding principles and being a great place to work. I feel very lucky to play a part in making this happen.

Georgia Dean, Employee Relations Partner

I started in the HR Service Centre in 2015, where I learned about different parts of the business. The company gave me the chance to shadow experienced colleagues and work on different projects and this helped me to take the step forward into my current role.

In this role, I’m exposed to new things every day. I get to work with lots of different people across the company and learn about them and their roles. And I’m involved in incredibly interesting work. No two cases are ever the same and, given some of the legal areas we cover, they can be complex, challenging and very high profile, which gives you real opportunities for development.

Faye-Ellen Fairburn, Direct Resourcing Consultant

I joined NFU Mutual on the day the UK went into Covid-19 lockdown. It was daunting at first, because you need to learn the ropes on your own. But the IT and HR teams were really supportive in getting me up and running at home.

I had a structured four-week induction plan to learn every aspect of the business, including e-learning. And, as well as online work meetings, my team organised weekly coffee chats and quizzes to get to know one another. I was also assigned a buddy who gave me more one-to-one support. I feel very fortunate to be part of a team that are so kind and fun!

Michaela Holder, Agency Resourcing Consultant

I joined NFU Mutual in 2017 after my manager from my previous job moved here and recommended it to me. I really liked the friendly and rewarding culture and was attracted by the chance to get involved in creating a centralised recruitment team.

I’ve worked in four different areas of Resourcing and have always felt trusted and supported all my roles. It’s the little things that really make you feel appreciated. It could be a simple ‘thank you’ from a Stakeholder, a chocolate brownie or even a bottle of fizz. It’s not what you receive, but the fact that you’re acknowledged for you hard work that goes such a long way.

Sarah Carey, Resourcing Consultant

I joined NFU Mutual during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, so it was strange to start with! But the fact that I was still able to start on the planned date shows a caring and supportive business. IT were great on day one getting everything installed remotely for me.

I also had a structured induction that got me talking to my team. They all responded to my regular emails asking for help and my manager was supportive, positive and always happy to make time to catch up. We also had coffee chat calls and Friday social calls. Everyone told me how great it is to work here – they obviously enjoyed their jobs.
