Risk Management Services
The largest risk management consultancy business in the UK
Risk Management Services
We’re a wholly owned subsidiary of NFU Mutual and not only are we the largest risk management consultancy business in the UK, but our experience and knowledge of the rural sector is unrivalled. In plain English, we exist to help NFU Mutual customers manage their risks and protect their property. Yes, we have a lot of farming clients but you might be surprised to see who else we work with and the scale of what we do - from zoos to golf courses, food processing plants to garden centres.
Our dedicated, expert consultants offer risk management advice to help customers reduce losses and have fewer accidents and, ultimately, to help our parent company with one of its key strategic objectives: sustainable, profitable growth.
Our key teams
Our Management and Administration teams are based at our Stratford-upon-Avon Head Office, as are our project and technical, quality and development managers. Together, we provide all-important admin and operational support to our consultants and other NFU Mutual departments.
We have two types of home-based Risk Management consultants here: Loss Control (insurance) and Health & Safety. The former carries out customer visits at the request of underwriters to provide invaluable insight to NFU Mutual on the risks we insure. Meanwhile, our Health & Safety Consultants primarily work through the NFU Mutual Agency Network as clients paid for work, but also through subsidised means to some clients with General Insurance premiums greater than £25,000.
Our home-based Sales Consultants work closely with NFU Mutual Agents, customers and Risk Management Consultants to sell health and safety services - either as stand-alone paid for work or as part of a wider insurance offering.

Developing your career
Our work has a noble cause and directly impacts our customers by making sure that they’re working as safely as possible. So keeping our people’s skills current and comprehensive is really important to us. To start, every new consultant has an extensive training period.
But learning is a continuous process, so we’ll give you access to a variety of training opportunities - internally and externally - throughout your career with us. These might be in specialist areas such as fire risks, etc. We also sit on a number of industry committees in order to keep abreast of developments which might impact NFU Mutual and our customers.
A day in the life of ...
While no two days in Risk Management Services are the same, we thought we’d offer you a small insight into what you might experience as a Risk Management Consultant.
Check that I’ve got all the necessary paperwork and COVID PPE. Head to site.
Arrive at my workplace for the day - an arable farm in East Anglia.
Say hello and then head to the kitchen table and spend some proper time getting to know my client’s business.
We take the time to explore and understand what H&S measures and culture are in place, and offer clear advice and practical solutions where we can.
Pause for lunch.
Have a good walk (and chat) around the farm site with my client.
Take lots of notes and photos. And get lots of fresh air!
Wrap up and confirm any urgent requirements and answer any last-minute queries.
Hop in the car and head home - knowing that we’ve made some great practical suggestions to safeguard people's lives.
Prepare the client’s paperwork.
Meet some of the team
Reuben Evans, Operations Manager
When I joined NFU Mutual’s Risk Management Services (RMS) team in 2002, they were really taking a chance with me. As an RMS Consultant, you need the maturity to relate to customers and foster great conversations and I was a fresh-faced graduate who didn’t have that.
With patience, mentoring, encouragement and some constructive criticism, I learned the ropes and increased in confidence and technical knowledge. It took some time, but the unwavering support I received is something I’ll always be grateful for. Almost 20 years later, I’m now a senior manager in RMS, helping to lead, influence and shape the future for this subsidiary business.
Robin Till, Senior Loss Control Consultant
NFU Mutual is obviously associated with farming, but in my role, I’m more involved with rural businesses and food industries. So, since I joined in 2011, I’ve learned a great deal about the UK food industry and how food gets to our plates. I like working for a mutual that puts our members at the centre of the business.
Our Claims team really do their best to settle claims and minimise disruption for members when they need us most. That reflects the overall company culture - there’s a sense of trying to do the right thing by our members, rather than just focus on profit and numbers.
