Risk Management Services

The Risk Management Services (RMS) team at NFU Mutual is not only the largest Risk Management Consultancy in the UK, it also has unrivalled experience and knowledge of the rural sector. Our Risk Management Consultants span two disciplines, Loss Control and Health and Safety. While they’re different areas of expertise, both are very much customer-facing roles with wide exposure to the NFU Mutual client base.

Our Loss Control team work on behalf of the insurer and are focused on loss prevention from an insurance claim perspective, providing on the ground knowledge to our underwriters whilst also supporting our customers with important advice and instructions on how to improve their risk.

Our Health and Safety team work on behalf of the client to help them comply with legislation that governs health and safety in the workplace to help prevent accidents for their staff and customers.

Both teams advise our customers on how to reduce losses and have fewer accidents, which ultimately helps NFU Mutual with one of its key strategic objectives: sustainable, profitable growth.

Our key teams

Risk Management - Health and Safety Consultants

The Health and Safety consultants work primarily through the NFU Mutual Agency Network, but also with General Insurance premiums greater than £25k, and provide advice to customers to ensure they comply with Health and Safety legislation and reduce the risk of accidents in the workplace.

All our consultants are home-based.

Risk Management - Loss Control Consultants

The Loss Control consultants work on behalf of NFU Mutual Underwriters and provide invaluable insight on the risks we insure. They carry out customer visits and survey commercial and residential premises to better understand associated risks, minimise potential loss and reduce the likelihood of claims.

All our consultants are home-based.

Management and Administration

Based in our Stratford upon Avon offices at Ryon Hill Park, our Management and Administration team provides administrative, project and technical support to our Risk Management Consultants, as well as the other NFU Mutual departments.

Sales

The home-based Sales Consultants work closely with NFU Mutual Agents and Risk Management Consultants to identify customers who would benefit from our health and safety services.

Risk Management Services at-a-glance

Our Risk Management Services team is made up of three key teams that work together across the UK to deliver value to both our customers and NFU Mutual. Developing your career

The work the RMS team does directly impacts our customers by making sure that they’re working as safely as possible. So, keeping our people’s skills current and comprehensive is really important to us. When a consultant joins the team, we provide an extensive training period to ensure they’re properly equipped in their role.

We recognise learning is a continuous process, so we also give our people access to a variety of internal and external training opportunities throughout their career with us. This could include training in specialist areas, such as fire risks or supporting people in the team to gain appropriate professional qualifications. We also facilitate mentoring sessions with Senior Management to help each person to grow and maximise their career potential.

Everyone in the team agrees that they’ve never stopped learning.

Meet some of the team

Claire Cripps, Risk Management Consultant

I really enjoy having a customer-facing role and the diversity it brings. I see a lot of things as ‘the eyes and ears of underwriting’ and that provides a great opportunity to learn. I’ve been in Loss Control for over four years now and I’ve continually developed my knowledge during this time.

Reuben Evans, Operations Manager

When I joined the Risk Management Services (RMS) team in 2002, NFU Mutual were really taking a chance with me. An RMS Consultant needs maturity to relate to customers and foster great conversations. As I was a fresh-faced graduate, I didn’t really have that.

But with patience, mentoring, encouragement, and some constructive criticism, I learned the ropes and increased in confidence and technical knowledge. It took some time, but the unwavering support I received is something I’ll always be grateful for. Almost 20 years later, I’m now a senior manager in RMS, helping to lead, influence and shape the future for this subsidiary business.

NFU Mutual are really supportive. Not just through my professional development, but personally too. During the pandemic I think they were great. We were always provided with guidance on what we were expected to do. And if at any point we felt unsafe, we had the full backing of our leaders within RMS to just walk away off site.

The same support applies to managing home life. For example, when people needed to provide home-schooling or childcare during the pandemic, they were given plenty of support to do what they needed to do, and their targets were reduced accordingly. This kind of support was invaluable during a really difficult time.

Robin Till, Senior Loss Control Consultant

NFU Mutual is obviously associated with farming, but in my role, I’m more involved with rural businesses and food industries. Since I joined the RMS team in 2011, I’ve learned a great deal about the UK food industry and how food gets onto our plates.

I like working for a mutual because it’s all about putting our members at the centre of the business. Our Claims team really do their best to settle claims and minimise disruption for members when they need us most. This way of working reflects the overall company culture – there’s a sense of trying to do the right thing for our members, rather than just focusing on profit and numbers.

There’s just such a huge variety of clients. One day I’ll be working with well-known wine brands you see on the supermarket shelves, so that takes me to wineries. The next day I’ll be working with large estates and then onto smaller houses; it’s really all walks of life. This role brings me into contact with clients you wouldn't perhaps expect to be involved with at all.

James Tibbetts, Risk Management Consultant

We're always looking to reduce the risk of injury, and ultimately save lives, whether that’s people working on farms, or in the many other businesses we’re connected with. I absolutely love meeting people, getting to know how their businesses operate and being able to bring something to reduce risk for them and their employees.

If we just go out and deliver health and safety advice and walk away without having a relationship with the client, it isn't giving them value for money, reducing the risk or creating a safer environment. By working together, we encourage clients along their journey of providing a safe working environment for their people.

We have a good development programme and system of training. There’s a skills matrix, which helps you identify any of your weaker areas, and you can get support from head office and colleagues to develop your skills as you feel necessary. Working from home you do have to drive your own development, but if you identify where you want to develop there's plenty of opportunity.

Andrew Scargill, Risk Management Consultant

Every single day you're in a different environment, you're looking at different types of risks, and it's just so enjoyable. This week I’ve visited a fantastic farm doing woodland regeneration, a joinery business and a food manufacturing site.

I’ve also visited lots of beautiful places that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to visit without working for NFU Mutual. I don't think I would ever have gone to the Shetland Islands or the Outer Hebrides had it not been that my clients were there – but I’m glad they were!
