A great place to work

A SUPPORTIVE CULTURE WHERE YOU’LL BE EMPOWERED AND INSPIRED

Life at NFU Mutual

When you’re good at what you do, you can pretty much choose where you want to work. We understand that. Which is why we do more and offer more to make NFU Mutual a place where people like you want to work.

Being part of a Mutual makes all the difference - we don’t have any shareholders to keep happy, so we can focus on the long-term interests of our members. We have a great business and a culture that encourages everyone to support each other to grow. Join us and you’ll discover how well we treat and respect one another, how we encourage everyone to develop their skills, and most importantly that we do all of this while ensuring that the wellbeing of you and your family is taken care of.

We’re also proud to be a business that recognises and rewards everybody’s contribution. Above all, a place that offers more than a job and a salary – a chance to be part of something really special.

Learning and development

Bringing the best out of you

We want you to reach your full potential and do the best work of your career at NFU Mutual. So we’ll train you. We’ll encourage you. We’ll develop you. And we’ll challenge you where you need to be challenged while supporting you every single step of the way.

We’ve invested in numerous personal and professional development programmes that enable you to develop your skills, expertise and career, while ensuring that, as a business, we continue to be profitable, in line with our three key objectives.

Professional and personal development

We’ll make sure that your development plan is tailored to you and your needs. For example, you might want to focus on something specific, like improving your PowerPoint skills or developing your one-to-one coaching abilities. But you might also want to work on your behaviours, on your softer skills.

That could be anything from raising your self-awareness, to big picture thinking. Everything we do is about helping you to be even better. And providing it’s relevant to your role, we'll also support you - practically and financially - to gain recognised professional or academic qualifications.

Management development

Skilled and capable managers provide their teams with clear expectations, behaviours and standards that will help them to develop and flourish. From managing individual performance and giving effective 360° feedback, to adapting your style for operational management and project management, we will continue to build on the skills you’ve gained and provide opportunities to gain recognised qualifications.

Whether you’re a first-time manager or you’ve been leading teams for a few years, we are committed to your continued development. With a robust framework for both continuing and progression-based development, there is support available at every stage of your career.

Leadership development

Great leaders never stop learning, so we will work with you to help identify the right type of leadership development and support. Our dedicated Leadership Development centre of expertise manages our internal communities of qualified coaches and mentors, to work with you on everything from onboarding to role transitions. We can help you to navigate and lead through change and provide a bespoke consultancy in partnership with leading organisations such as Gallup, Pearn Kandola and Henley Business School to provide high-quality and up-to-date thought leadership.

Senior Leaders have access to Executive Coaching and relevant, impactful workshops on storytelling, emotional intelligence, Strengths-based leadership and team dynamics form the basis of our internal leadership development offering for leaders at all levels. In 2021 we also launched our market-leading programme for technical leaders, because we recognise that not all leaders are people managers.

Coaching and mentoring

Our dedicated Leadership Development centre of expertise manages our internal communities of qualified coaches and mentors, to work with you on everything from onboarding to role transitions. Relationships are central to who we are and having the opportunity to work with a coach or mentor, either as an individual or as a team, is a powerful way to unlock potential and be the best version of ourselves at work.

We are an EMCC-registered organisation and leaders at all levels can access an internal coach when it suits them, in addition to having dedicated mentor or coach support on any of our development programmes. For Senior Leadership roles at Level 6 and above, there is the opportunity to work directly with one of our partner Executive Coaches.

Looking after your wellbeing

Your mental wellbeing

Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Our Employee Assistance Programme is a positive, preventative and supportive advice service that can help you deal with events and issues that can affect your everyday work and personal life. The confidential service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - and is easily accessible via the app, by visiting the website or calling the helpline.

Your physical wellbeing

Your physical wellbeing affects how much energy you have and how you feel emotionally as well as physically. It encompasses all aspects of your health - including your fitness, what you eat and drink, whether you smoke and the impact of any medical conditions you have. We run a range of initiatives across NFU Mutual - from promoting healthier lunch options to encouraging you to take better breaks. Think about signing-up to the Cycle to Work Scheme or taking advantage of our gym discount scheme. It’s not about running marathons but looking after yourself!

Your financial wellbeing

We understand that money matters - and that juggling personal finances can be a cause of concern. There are a number of ways that we can help you manage personal finances well to create financial security, reduce day-to-day stress caused by debt and build financial reserves. You could save money by taking advantage of the discounts and offers we have for NFU Mutual Insurance Products or through our Perkz scheme. You also have access to a dedicated Financial Advisor, who can help with financial planning, retirement planning and ensuring that your financial goals are met.

Your social wellbeing

One of the great things about working here - and something our people mention a lot - is the sense of family and team spirit. We run regular events to get people together, locally and nationally. But social wellbeing isn’t just about socialising at work. Work-life balance is hugely important, and we’ll help to make sure that you have a healthy balance between the two. We also encourage everyone here to volunteer or give back to local communities.

Supporting our communities

As the UK’s leading rural insurer, we’re in a unique position to understand the issues affecting our members and their communities. We care about their health and wellbeing, and work hard to protect their livelihoods. Through our Agency Giving Fund, the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust and the Farm Safety Foundation, we continue to support the communities we operate in across the UK.

We encourage all our people to do their bit too. Through our employee volunteering programme, employees gave 4,125 of their working hours to support their local community in 2023, lending a hand at schools, hospices, foodbanks and wildlife and conservation projects, to name but a few.
