Ensuring we do things right to secure our future

Internal Audit

But it’s not all about providing assurance - it’s also about adding value. We work with teams across the business to recommend improvements and best practice, too. With excellent training and development opportunities, including support towards Chartered status, Internal Audit’s proved to be a great launchpad for careers across NFU Mutual.

A day in the life of ...

While no two days in Internal Audit are the same, we thought we’d offer you a small insight into what you might experience as an Auditor.

8.15am

Drive to work, aim to get into the office for 9 o’clock.

9.00am

Grab a coffee from the canteen followed by a team meeting to get organised for the day.

9.30am

Face-to-face meeting with our business client to review requests and understand their area. All part of building a strong working relationship.

11:00am

Evidence gathering. We do this each day to check we’re getting the evidence we need to form our audit conclusions.

12.00pm

Lunchtime! We usually head to the canteen as a team. It’s nice to catch up and discuss non-work things.

1:00pm

Update my manager on the morning’s work, field any questions and prepare for tomorrow’s meetings.

2:00pm

Check in with the team. Leading an audit, it’s good to keep tabs on progress and find out if they need any support.

3:00pm

Update the client. We work on a no surprises basis, so a daily update lets them know where the audit is and any issues.

4:00pm

Write up. I usually like to write up my day’s work on file. It helps to keep it up-to-date while I remember!

Matt Donnan, Data Analytics Auditor

Before joining NFU Mutual, other than a basic awareness that they sold insurance, I really didn't know much about the business. Yet every time I mentioned their name, I got the same response – "NFU Mutual. A great place to work. They really care about their staff". In the absence of anything but praise, and a job with Internal Audit catching my eye, the only sensible option was to apply!

I’m so glad I did. Audit is uniquely placed to have oversight and exposure across the entire business. In my role, I have the freedom to set the direction of all things data and the opportunity to do both challenging and stimulating work every day. I solve a variety of issues and work with a network of great people, so no two days are the same. Couple this with an incredibly supportive group of colleagues and it really is "a great place to work”.

Chris Barker, Auditor

I joined NFU Mutual after a stint at a ‘Big Four’ firm. I was looking for a company that prioritised a good work-life balance, without compromising on the benefits and rewards package.

I was drawn to Internal Audit as I love the variety and challenge it brings. The role suits me as I’m always learning something new! I enjoy building strong relationships with the people we audit, getting to know their business and then working with them to improve how they do things.

Harry Cairns, Audit Professional Trainee

I joined NFU Mutual on the Professional Trainee scheme in September 2021. I was drawn to the company’s reputation of being customer focused – and for having a highly regarded graduate programme. I was quite open minded about what I’d like to do after graduating, but chose Internal Audit as it provides an opportunity for me to gain insight into how different areas of the business operate and a chance to apply problem solving skills in practice.

One of the things I most enjoy about my role is that no day is the same! In my first year I had exposure to a wide variety of audits across different areas of the business, each with their own opportunities, challenges and chances to learn. I also enjoy working with different members of the team, who have all been very supportive and allowed me to develop as an Auditor.

Graham Weaver, Auditor

To be honest, I hadn’t heard of NFU Mutual when I applied to join them in 1993, but they were recommended by a university colleague. The company culture’s closely aligned to my morals - they always look to do the best for their members. For me this is just right.

We’re very active and supportive in the farming and wider sectors and the people are very supportive too in helping each other. The people play a large part in why I’ve stayed here for over 25 years. I’ve made some great friends, many of whom still work for the company.
